Description of the Project
Skonto Plan, the company of Skonto Group took part in the construction of the buildings for the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (European Spallation Source or ESS) in Lund, Sweden. The building complex Campus ESS consists of three buildings and Skonto Plan ensured the design, manufacture and assembly of aluminium glazed structures and facade cassettes. Facade finishing with aluminium lining takes approximately 9 thousand m2, which is 60% of the total facade area. It is the aluminium lining that creates the specific architecture with cassettes in different triangular shapes made of anodized aluminium sheets. This material, its colour and texture was long and carefully chosen to produce the necessary effect that architects and the customer had intended when thinking about durability. Damage to anodized surfaces (scratches, creases) cannot be repaired, so it is necessary to work with care. The cassettes were designed as large triangles (3-4m long), integrating them into substructures to meet all technical, load and visual characteristics. It should be noted that the material is a very thin that makes the task of producing, supplying and assembly a quality product particularly complex. Despite the fact that the material this this kind of architectural elements is very ungrateful, the result is impressive. The silver anodised facade together with the silver-covered glass looks like a diamond on a sunny day. Our client, Skanksa Sverige AB, calls this project “the shining diamond”.
